While there is obviously not all that much to do in Nauru there are still some gems, such as the Tropicana Cafe and Capelle in general.
Which begs the question who are Capelle? Lets delve into that first.
What the Capelle?
Capelle & Partner, better known as Capelle, is Nauru’s all-in-one shop for just about everything. Need groceries? They’ve got it. Looking for clothes, hardware, or even a bite to eat? Capelle’s got you covered. It’s part supermarket, part general store, and a bit of a social hub for the island.
And that is not all with there also being the main liquor store for the island (Bundy anyone), as well as perhaps the best cafe in Nauru, Tropicana.
This though does not answer the what the Capelle question, with the answer being that they are the private monolith in an otherwise rather communist state. Think Sheriff in Transnsitria if you need further context.
There is also a hotel of sorts here, but we will deal with that another time…
What the Tropicana Cafe?
Located just outside of the supermarket part this is for all intents the only place that you can get good coffee in Nauru. As well as that they are also bastions of Nauru cuisine, as well as the fusion that it has with Chinese and Filipino cuisines.
This means that you can get longanista sausages with fried eggs, as well as Chinese dumplings and Nauru style fish and chips. And yes Nauru do something more akin to chips rather than the culinary abomination that is French fries. Theres also a bakery, with you being able to either enjoy it on the veranda, or next to Eva Beach.
Eva Beach you say?
Eva Beach is one of the best beaches in Nauru, but sadly that is not saying very much at all. To call Nauru unlucky would be a great understatement, but said understatement is best exemplified by their lack of beaches. Yes things look nice here, but the jagged rocks make swimming nigh on impossible.
There are though shaded areas and it does offer a great view. In fact the view and ambience is so great that you do think for a bit that you are actually in paradise.
So should you end up on a Nauru Tour, be sure to stick your head in here, if nothing else for lack of a better idea.
