Swimming at Anibare Bay Nauru

Anibare Bay

Probably the most unlucky island in the world due to its lack of beaches there is still one place to swim in Nauru and that is Anibare Bay.

This area was created to be a bay that deals with boats taking people out to sea, but has since become not just a local phenomenon, but also a top hit with the few tourists that make it to Nauru.

What the Anibare Bay?

Anibare Bay is where Nauru’s small-town vibe meets its rough coral coastline. This stretch of beach isn’t winning any awards, but it’s the closest thing to a local hangout. Boats bob offshore, used for fishing or the occasional pleasure cruise, while kids splash around in the shallows—one of the few spots on the island where locals actually play. Right next to the fish market, it’s also a go-to for fresh seafood, with locals casting lines and hauling in catches.

Tourists? Well, there aren’t many, but the ones that come are mostly brought by Young Pioneer Tours. For visitors, it’s a decent place to escape the heat, catch a sea breeze, and see a slice of Nauruan life. Don’t expect luxury or cocktails—this is as simple as it gets. But hey, that’s part of the charm, right?

Swimming at Anibare Bay

Actually swimming here and how good it is will depend very much on the weather. I have been here a number of times when the waves are big and the current is strong. Couple this with a lot pf boats coming in and out and well Bali it is not.

Swimming here though when the weather is good is not just rewarding, but can offer a great place to truly unwind and forget you are in the least visited country in the world.

After swimming

After swimming at Anibare Bay you have the options of going to eat and drink at a few great places that are within walking distance, a rare treat in Nauru.

These include the Chinese-Western fusion dishes at Anibare Boat Harbour Restaurant, but also the best restaurant in all of Nauru, namely Bayview.

But we are not finished there with the Yanggakdo like Meneng Hotel being a mere 16 minutes walk from here. This is at least where I was staying, as well as technically somewhere that offers food and drink.
