Eating With Cambodian Masterchef At Srey Noch

Srey Noch

Its not every day you get to be cooked for by a master chef, but at Srey Noch Master Chef that is exactly what happens. How do I know this? Because not only is it the name of her restaurant, but she actually won Cambodian Masterchef!

What the Cambodian Masterchef?

MasterChef started in the UK in 1990 and has since become a global phenomenon, with local versions in over 60 countries. The show’s format is simple: amateur chefs compete in cooking challenges to impress a panel of judges and avoid elimination. It’s known for its high-pressure environment and a mix of creativity and technical skill.

MasterChef Cambodia follows the same formula but highlights the country’s unique flavors and ingredients. It’s a relatively new addition to the franchise, showcasing dishes like fish amok and num banh chok while giving local talent a platform. It’s an exciting way to spotlight Khmer cuisine on the world stage.

Srey Noch Master Chef

Srey Noch restaurant is located in the infamous BKK area of Phnom Penh now far from Independence Park and at a market called Kabco Market Said market actually surprised me somewhat as I was expecting fine dining rather than a food court.

A food court though it is with there probably being about 8 eateries around it all for the most part serving Khmer food, although I did spot at least one hamburger….

I though quite liked this with Kabco Market and indeed Srey Noch being closer to my street food persona.

The menu and the food at Srey Noch

The menu at Srey Noch Master Chef Restaurant is a carefully curated showcase of Khmer flavors. Traditional dishes like fish amok and beef lok lak are given a refined touch, while prahok ktis offers a bold, authentic taste of Cambodia. There’s also a nod to street food, with creative interpretations of local favorites. Seasonal ingredients are front and center, ensuring each dish bursts with freshness.

This is good old fashioned fusion and reimagining with the host having a penchant for things being slightly rare, very much to my liking.

So, how did the food taste?

I went for the lamb with chips fearing the beef would not be rare enough, which was probably a mistake. The lamb though was decent and served to me as requested fairly rare.

My accompanying foodie went for a rare beef dish which kind fo looked like a loklak, but wasn’t. This had a great sauce with the beef again being done fairly close to perfection. Drinks as is the case in these kinds of places was gotten from another vendor, but thankfully gave the option for sugar cane juice.

And not only was the food decent, but it was pretty busy with people seemingly wanting to travel here to be fed by a “Master Chef”. Was it earth shattering? No, and it would have been nice if the chef had asked our opinions, but overall worth coming at least once if you are in down town Phnom Penh.
