Is the King Lud The Best Pub in Ryde?

King Lud

Is the King Lud the best pub in Ryde? Well if you are to measure on the kind of metrics that poncy ale enthusiasts or pretentious pub connoisseurs then no it is not. If though you like a proper English country boozer then it truly takes some beating.

And I say this after a full 10 years of popping  in and out of here as I sail through visiting the Isle of Wight.

The Pubs of Ryde

Ryde’s nightlife is a great mix of relaxed spots and places with a bit more buzz. If you’re after a quiet pint, places like The Black Sheep and The King’s Head are perfect. These pubs have a chilled vibe, with a decent selection of ales and the kind of cozy, friendly atmosphere that makes you want to stick around for another drink. They’re the type of places where you can chat with the locals, enjoy a game of darts, and just soak in the easy-going island life.

For something a little more lively, head over to The Ryde Social Club or The White Hart. Both have a bit more action, with music and events, but still keep that welcoming feel. And then, of course, there’s The King Lud. It’s a bit rough around the edges, not the cleanest or fanciest place on the island, but that’s really why I quite like it. Oh and yes, of course there is a Weatherspoons.

What the King Lud?

The King Lud in Ryde is one of those pubs that’s got bags of character, even if it’s not the kind of place you’d take your mum on Mother’s Day. With a history stretching back over 200 years, it’s seen more than its fair share of island shenanigans. Named after the ancient king of the Isle of Wight, it’s a local legend, serving up pints and good times to anyone who walks through its doors. They’ve got a solid selection of real ales and ciders—perfect for a bit of local flavor. But it’s not just about the drinks.

The King Lud hosts a few cracking events, like quiz nights, karaoke, and live music. It’s the sort of place where you can have a laugh with strangers and leave with new mates. Will you get hit on? Probably……

A sample night out at the King Lud

I tend to visit The King Lud whenever I’m on the Isle of Wight, even if it’s just for one night. The results are usually the same: I end up befriending the locals and, let’s just say, making a bit of a splash. This year, I visited over the weekend, which meant karaoke was on.

While I was there, I was hit on by a woman who had eight kids (including stepkids) and was barely 40. The group even tried to recruit me to their drinking crew. Were I to live here, though, I’m sure it’d be up for it actually. Oh, and I wrapped up the night with a classic rendition of I Want to Break Free by Queen. And yes I left the masses wanting more Street Food Guy.

Getting there’s easy, whether you’re coming by foot, bike, or public transport. Ryde’s got a great ferry connection from Portsmouth, and once you’re in town, it’s only a short walk from Ryde Esplanade, where you’ll find the bus and train stations. The train station is about a 10-minute walk from the pub, or if you’re catching a bus, you’ve got the Ryde Bus Station just a stone’s throw away. If you’re driving, there’s parking nearby, but don’t expect to park directly outside, as it’s pretty busy around the High Street.
