Best in Medan? – Hotel Deli River

Hotel Deli River

The Hotel Deli River is one of the best hotels in Medan as well as a great launching pad for travel within the region. This though brother than making it excellent is more an incitement in how bad things are in the region.

I was personally here as part of a research trip and private tour that also took us to the uneventful Samosir Island, before I was to head to the Palawan Island Tour.

What the Medan?

Medan is a the major city in the Sumatra area of Indonesia, as well as the 4th largest city within Indonesia itself. This makes it a major political, economic and transit hub with thus huge largely Muslim country.

Because of all the great things in the area, as well as its international airport it is also not only a destination point for tourists, but also a laugh pad for other places.

The city itself has an interesting largely islamic past and is covering a huge land mass to house its 2,600,000 people.

I will later give a fully guide to Madan, but the main things to do around here are traveling to the aforementioned Samosir Island (by ferry), heading north (12 hours) to Banda Aceh, as well as the Banda Baru “entertainment district”

The River Deli Hotel

Located a little out in the boonies this hotel sits on. A beautiful piece of land and is set up with both rooms, as well as guesthouses which are again well made out.

Said guesthouses are spread literally throughout the grounds, which make them quite the track to get to. All though have a lovely balcony area which is perfect to watch the ever so regular rain fall.

Facilities at the Hotel Dli River

There is huge central “hotel” part which has a restaurant, reception, communal room and swimming pool, which is quite nice.

The restaurant here is also fairly good and represented the closest thing to food I’d had in almost 4 days. That is not to say it is 5 star, but more middle of the road, which prices there to match. I got lunch for 3 and it barely touched $30.

One of the main draws here though is the fact that the owners are “travel agents”. I ams are their heart is in the right place, but also their product really is not.

The rooms here are excellent with decent wifi, TV and a fair level of cleanliness.

Around the Hotel Deli River

Directly around the streets of the Hotel River Deli are the kind of rural roads you get throughout Indonesia. This consists of the ready made help yourself type street restaurants, bad convince stores (opposite each other) and of course places selling bad friend rice and fried noodles.

I will later do a piece about just why of what the food here is as bad as it is.
