Hong Kong Sun Fat Roast Restaurant Shenzhen

Hong Kong Sun Fat Roast Restaurant

Hong Kong Sun Fat Roast Restaurant might not be a name that rolls of the tongue, but said tongue does get a treat when you eat here. How though did I end up at such a place with a gunny name?

We were personally drawn here after our previous nights dining at Renmin Lu spotting Hong Kong Sun Fat Restaurant on our stroll back. And the attraction? It was big, busy and well with Hong Kong food you pretty much just know its gonna be good – at least in my experience so far….

What the Hong Kong Sun Fat Roast Restaurant?

Sun Fat Roast Restaurant has been a cornerstone of Hong Kong’s food culture since it first opened in 1968. Renowned for its perfectly roasted meats, including crispy roast pork, juicy char siu, and golden-skinned roast duck, Sun Fat quickly became a local favorite. Its original location in Mong Kok remains a bustling hub, often with lines of eager diners spilling out onto the street.

Over the years, Sun Fat has expanded its reach, opening additional branches across Hong Kong and even into Shenzhen. These Shenzhen locations have brought the restaurant’s authentic Cantonese flavors to mainland China, cementing its reputation as a cross-border culinary institution.

And it was in Shenzhen at my office in Guo Mao where I would get to try the place. I am not sure if it is a branch, or a franchise, but well, the boys done good.

The Hong Kong Sun Fat Roast Restaurant Menu

While Sun Fat Roast Restaurant is best known for its legendary Cantonese roasted meats—think crispy roast pork, honey-glazed char siu, and perfectly roasted duck—it’s the diversity of the menu that keeps diners coming back for more. Beyond the classics, Sun Fat surprises with a range of quirky and unexpected offerings.

One standout is their steak, a tender cut served sizzling and seasoned with a Cantonese twist. Seafood lovers can indulge in dishes like garlic prawns or steamed fish, prepared fresh and bursting with flavor. But the real curveball? The cheese rice combo. This comfort-food fusion pairs gooey, melted cheese with fluffy rice and for us at least a whole heap of seafood, such as shrimp, crab and oyster. You do gotta love how they pull off fusion food down in Hong Kong.

We went for said rice dish, some noodles and a mixed plate of various blends of duck meat. Beijing Roast Duck might be the most famous Chinese take on this animal, but Hong Kong duck also takes some beating.

Drinks wise theres a full range of local beers, as well as soft drinks, but alas unlike Ancient BBQ opposite there is no draft beer.

The Hong Kong Sun Fat Roast Restaurant Vibe

This restaurant, at least in Luo Hu is a big bustling affair with a huge outside area, as well as a few floors of inside dining. And it is bloody busy throughout the day and night with you pretty much having to seat yourself. And while they have a QR code menu – they also have a good old fashioned paper one.

You are though required to pay as soon as you have ordered which in my mind at least means you end up drinking less. And while it does make this feel a bit fast-food like in fairness the food does come out super fast and is served super well by the athletic staff.

So, overall Hong Kong Sun Fat Roast Restaurant gets a big thumbs up from me, and now with the knowledge that it is 24/7 I can see myself ending up here post-soju.
