OK, so I might have been premature when I wrote my last awesome dim sum review in Guo Mao because after trying the offerings of the Grand Restaurant there is at least one other player in town.
And if nothing else it at least shows just how good the dim sum served in Shenzhen are, as well as just how important this culinary delight is to Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macanese people.
What the Dim Sum?
Dim Sum are the famous dumplings and other dishes that are not just served in Guangdong cuisine, but are extremely famous the world over. This has of course led to copy cat restaurants such as Dim Sum Avenue in Cambodia. Alas these are very much knockoffs as I explained to our Cambodian visitor.
It is though not just Cambodia where this dish gets ripped off, with there being Dim Sum Dumpling restaurants throughout the globe. Dim Sum though is much more dumplings. And I mean this not just from the servings, but also the whole cultural experience that eating this is.
If you want the full lowdown on this you can check out my rather in depth article on the whole affair, as well as my review of another local restaurant.
What the Grand Restaurant?
The Grand Restaurant is part of the Marriott Hotel, or Renaissance Hotel that is right across from my office. Seemingly it is all about the Dim Sum as it is boasts a huge ballroom type dining area that is synonymous with this dish.
As in other locales the Grand Restaurant Guo Mao is always super busy with guests filling out a paper order form that is then given to one of the dozen, or so waiting staff who run around like blue ass flies serving the masses.
The Dim Sum menu here is pretty much as expected with there not being anything out the ordinary, but also to my disappointment a lack of rabbit shaped dumplings. They did though have all of the shrimp ones that I love, as well as some serious Guangdong hot sauce that borders on the irresistible.
Price wise this is as you would expect from a top end restaurant that is quite literally called “Grand Restaurant” and that is not exactly cheap. Although in this sense I mean expensive for China. Our meal filled up three people, without alcohol to be fair and set us back about $50. This is also a fraction of what one could expect to find in Hong Kong where it can into the hundreds and even thousands of dollars.
Therefore I think this makes it one of the best places not just to get dim sum in Shenzhen, but also one of the best restaurants in the town in general.
Address of Grand Restaurant
As expected the nearest subway station here is Guo Mao, as well as it being walking distance from my abode!.
