The Legendary China Star Hotel and Restaurant Pohnpei

China Star

When a budget hotel costs $75 you know you are in an expensive country, but that is indeed the (discounted) deal at China Star Hotel.

Despite this though the China Star Hotel retains a legendary status for those traveling to the Federated States of Micronesia.

What the Pohnpei?

Pohnpei is the capital of the Federated States of Micronesia, home to about 36,000 people and covering 133 square miles. While it’s got the parliament and the main airport, don’t expect a buzzing metropolis.

The nightlife is limited to a few bars and restaurants, and entertainment options are sparse. It’s more of a place to relax than party, though the locals are friendly, and the scenery is lush. Think of it as the laid-back hub of Micronesia—quiet, simple, and best enjoyed with low expectations for excitement.

And quite literally one of the Least Visited Countries on earth…

The China Star Hotel

I read a review on booking.com that stated “It is better inside than out”. I was pleased to find that this was true as the outside looked like Stalag Luft, or an upscale Aucshwitz. In fact the inside was not all that much better, but at least the Chinese staff were friendly.

The rooms though are pretty specious although again quite simple. Interestingly I was on the third floor, but when I asked to go lower was warned against it. Apparently I wa sin one of the better rooms.

And the price? If you rock right up $98 a person, an amount I would have cried if I had paid. I ended up with $76. It does grind my gears places that charge more than for an internet booking, but such is life.

The China Star Restaurant

The highlight of here is the Chinese restaurant which is full up every single night and indeed day. The staff all come from Zhejiang, which while not famous for its food is at least near the cuisine of Shanghai and Guangzhou.

The menu is eclectic and expensive, but again so is the island. Sadly the dishes are not built for one person, although this is more a problem with Chinese food. Everything I had through was great and more Chinese than you get in much of the Pacific.

Should you stay at China Seat Hotel?

Yes you should if you want budget accommodate. If you want something fancy then you need to go spend money on a resort, or try and get a room at Ocean View.

In this respects everything you read about the place is real, but you get what you pay for…..
