Kofi Kai is probably the best restaurant I have spent a lot of time in, but not written about. And that is pretty crazy as it is not only one of the best restaurants here, but by far serves the best breakfast.
Located in the complex that serves Hagen Central Supermarket, as well as a whole heap of super shops (such as where I buy my Rugby League shirts), this is a Mount Hagen institution.

What the Kofi Kai?
If the word Kofi seems familiar that is because that is the word for coffee in Tok Pisin the language of Papua New Guinea that shares more than striking resemblance to English. Kai on the other hand means eat, representing the duality of the place.
It is in one of the only kind of “malls” within Mount Hagen and therefore is around some other useful stuff, such as the ATM’s that do not actually work at all.
The restaurant itself has an outdoor area that is covered and is where the masses eat, as well as an upstairs and indoor area which is mainly for ordering and the like. Survive here is ace and the people are nice.
Eating and drinking at Kofi Kai
The menus here consists of all kinds of western food and is close to what you would expect from a decent Australian of Papuan cafe. As well as the full alacarte menu they also have all you can eat, as well as BBQ nights.
For food though I will concentrate on breakfast, which is pretty epic. For this they have every variation of egg you could imagine, as well as vegetarian varietals, and the big beast “full breakfast”. Said beast has egg, bacon, sausage, mushroom (yuk), tomato and a lamb chop. These guys do not fuck around.
Interestingly Kofi Kai Mount Hagen also have a concession in the supermarket which has the best breakfast muffins you will find in the area. In fact one might say “better than McDonalds”, but I will write this story later.
Perhaps most impressively though is the fact that can be done as a takeaway from the supermarket without having to que on the main till, so a true breakfast on the go.
Perhaps most useful and indeed impressive is that it is also right next to where the Mount Hagen Festival is hosted, if you like a bit of ease to your life.
