Fish and chips is a cutthroat business in Ryde. Within a short stretch of the Esplanade, you’ve got multiple options, including the much larger Codfather, and yet, the Esplanade Fish Bar not only survives—it thrives.
So, what makes this place special? I decided to put it to the test, stacking it up against its rivals while exploring the food scene in Ryde.
What the Ryde Esplanade?
If you’ve read my other ramblings, you’ll know that Ryde is the gateway to the Isle of Wight, thanks to its ferry connections, historic pier, and even a hovercraft service. The esplanade itself is long, breezy, and lined with classic British seaside attractions—arcades, pubs, candy shops, and, of course, chip shops.
Ryde is unapologetically British in the best way, and nowhere is this more evident than in its approach to deep-fried goodness.

The Esplanade Fish Bar – More Than Just Another Chippy
Despite being squeezed next to the bigger Codfather, the Esplanade Fish Bar holds its own with a menu that goes beyond the standard fare. Yes, you’ve got your traditional cod and chips, saveloys, and battered sausages, but they also have a few sexy new chip shop fusion dishes.
- Panko-coated fries – A crispy, slightly upmarket twist on the classic chip.
- Loaded chips – A belly-busting take on fries, topped with cheese, gravy, or even curry sauce.
- Halloumi fries – Because sometimes you want your fried cheese to be a little posher.
But what really sets it apart? Value. While the chippy next door offers cones of chips for £2.50, Esplanade Fish Bar does the same, but its chip butty—priced at £3.50—comes absolutely stuffed, beating many competitors, even the well-known Anchor Seafry of Lordswood fame.
And let’s not forget the view. Sitting inside, looking out over the beach while munching on an overflowing butty, even on a cold Wednesday in winter, makes this place a winner.

Where to Find It
- Address: Esplanade Fish Bar, Ryde Seafront, Isle of Wight
- How to Get There: Walk along the promenade from the ferry or hovercraft terminal, and you’ll find it right next to The Codfather.
- Nearby Attractions: Really near the King Lud, which means after beer chip shop jollies…
Final Thoughts – The Best Chippy in Ryde?
Esplanade Fish Bar might not be the most famous chip shop in Ryde, but it could still be the best, although on this point I do still have more places to try…..
What is cool though is that it still managed to exist parallel to so much competition. And while I did not sample the whole menu if the butty is anything to go by it can at least hold its own….
