Tours to North Korea to Resume in February

Tours to North Korea

After nearly five years of closure, I’m thrilled to announce that tours to North Korea are finally resuming in February 2025. This marks a huge step forward for both travelers and the country itself as it begins to reopen to the world.

The first research trip will head into the Rason Special Economic Zone on February 10th, departing from Yanji, China. Shortly after, our first group tour will kick off on February 16th, perfectly timed with the celebrations for Kim Jong Il’s birthday, one of the country’s most significant holidays.

And of course it was us that broke the big news….

What to Expect from the Tours

Our initial group tours to North Korea will run for four days and cost just €645, making them an incredibly affordable way to experience one of the world’s most unique destinations. These tours will focus on Rason, a fascinating special economic zone located near the borders of China and Russia. Known for its trade and international collaboration, Rason offers a unique window into North Korea’s economic ambitions and its efforts to engage with the wider world.

Some people have stated that Rason is boring, but this is not something I agree with at all. It is though very different from a Pyongyang tour, with much of, such as the street food, visits to the markets and other exceptions make it in some ways more interesting.

Interestingly, many North Korea watchers had predicted that Sinuiju, the border city adjacent to Dandong, China, would be the first to reopen. However, Rason’s strategic location and its history as a hub for economic activity make it an ideal choice for these initial tours.

Leading the Way with Young Pioneer Tours

For over a decade, Young Pioneer Tours has been at the forefront of travel to North Korea, introducing thousands of adventurous travelers to the country’s culture, history, and landscapes. Our team has always been committed to making tours to North Korea accessible, affordable, and safe for everyone, and we’re excited to take the lead once again as tourism resumes.

To ensure everything runs smoothly, we’ll begin with a research tour to iron out any logistical challenges. This approach reflects our dedication to responsible tourism and our mission to provide meaningful cultural exchanges while respecting local regulations. It’s been a long wait, but we’re ready to get back to doing what we do best—showing people the real North Korea.

A Long Hiatus

Tours to North Korea have been on hold since early 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The country implemented some of the strictest border controls in the world, effectively shutting itself off for nearly five years. This closure has been a challenging time for both the local tourism industry and international operators like us.

But now, with the announcement of these new tours to North Korea, there’s finally light at the end of the tunnel. This reopening signals a cautious yet optimistic return to normalcy and shows that North Korea is ready to re-engage with the world, albeit on its own terms.

Why Start with Rason?

The decision to begin with Rason is both strategic and symbolic. As a special economic zone, Rason has always been a key area for trade and international cooperation. Its proximity to China and Russia makes it a logical choice for testing the waters of renewed tourism.

Rason offers a unique blend of economic and cultural experiences. Visitors can explore bustling markets where goods from China, Russia, and North Korea are traded, as well as visit factories, ports, and other facilities that highlight the DPRK’s economic aspirations. These tours provide a rare glimpse into a side of North Korea that few outsiders ever see.

A Positive Step Forward

The resumption of tours to North Korea is a positive development for everyone involved. For the country, it’s a chance to boost its economy and improve its global image. For travelers, it’s an opportunity to experience a place that remains one of the most misunderstood and intriguing destinations in the world.

Our tours are designed to challenge stereotypes and foster greater understanding. By starting with Rason, we’re highlighting a side of North Korea that’s rarely in the spotlight, showcasing the resilience and adaptability of its people.

Looking Ahead

While these initial tours to North Korea are limited to Rason, we’re hopeful that this is just the beginning. In the future, we expect to see more areas reopening, including iconic destinations like Pyongyang, Kaesong, and Sinuiju. For now, these February tours represent a historic moment and a chance to be part of North Korea’s journey back to normalcy.

We’re proud to be leading the way, and we can’t wait to welcome travelers back to the DPRK. If you’ve ever dreamed of visiting North Korea, now’s the time to join us and be part of this incredible story.
